Walking

In 2004, IĀ read a book called "Across China On Foot", written in 1910 by an Englishman named Edwin Dingle. He walked from Chungking southwest through Sichuan and Yunnan to the Burmese border. It took him nine months, he spoke no Chinese, the hotels were squalid, the scenery magnificent. I thought: I can do better than that, I could walk from Shanghai, not from Chungking. And so I did. Each time I walk, I startĀ from exactly the place I last stopped. So it is not contiuous as was Mr Dingle's. So in one way, it is simply a series of Sunday strolls....
