German Woodcuts - 1940s

In the 1940s, Shanghai was the last refuge for some 20,000 European Jews persecuted by Nazi Germany, one of them German-born artist David Ludwig Bloch. Some of his woodcuts depicting life in Shanghai are shown here.

Institut Monumenta Serica and the China-Zentrum in Germany, have published a book of Bloch's Shanghai woodcuts entitled David Ludwig Bloch, Holzschnitte/Woodcuts 1940-1949 (ISBN 3-8050-0395-1). It can be ordered from Institut Monumenta Serica, Arnold-Janssen-Str. 20, D-53754 Sankt Augustin, Germany. Tel: +49-2241-237 432, fax: +49-2241-20 58 41, email: monumenta.serica@t-online.de
