The Wheel - Gambling den

In 1917, a successful gambling den was opened on North Henan Road Extension (now Baoshan Lu) known as "The Wheel."

Hawks Pott, Shanghai historian in the 1920s, says:

"Large sums of money were lost at this place and many young men ruined. Although there was a great outcry, it was difficult for the Council to do anything in the matter, as the casino was situated in Chinese territory. It required long negotiations with the Chinese authorities before the place was finally sealed up in November, 1918. Unfortunately in later years the same trouble arose, gambling houses with roulette wheels being established in the Settlement on Bubbling Well Road and on Yates Road. These were raided and closed in April, 1928."
