The first German School ...

"The first German school (Kaiser wilhelm Schule) was in the old Lutheran Church next to the Astor House Hotel. My sister went to school there, but I only went to the KWS in Weihaiwei Road. I used to ride my donkey and on the other side were open fields. The No. 2 (mafoo, or groom) ran behind me to take the donkey home again. The Avenue Paul Bruenat was quite countryfied. Our house was near the Route des Soeurs corner, then came the Arnholds house. then the German Garten Klub which the French took over in the 1914 war. We also had a big garden further up the road [i.e. just opposite the Huai Hai Apts). In 1914 our neighbor Mr. Ezra bought it. The garden was laid out by Mr. Eckart, a German landscape gardener who lived opposite and as he was a bachelor had tiffin with us every day."

Lutheran.bmp - This is a picture of the Lutheran Church, where the Kaiser Wilhelm Schule was held. The date on the back of the picture says 1902, yet Gisella now says she thinks it was taken around 1906 or 1907. She didn't recognize any of the school-children in it.

Gisella.bmp - is a picture of Gisella on her donkey "Alice" in front of her parent's house that was located on Avenue Joffre (named Ave. Joffre post WW1, named Avenue Paul Bruner pre WW1).

bremersc.bmp - is a picture of the "Bremer Schlüssel", the "garden opposite Huai Hai Apts." that Gisella describes, that was laid out by Mr. Eckart. The lady on the bridge was Gisella's mother- Isabel Meyer (nee: Tisdall).

Two of the photographs are in a different format-I believe that Alvin's grandmother (Gisella) cut them down at one point.
