The Shanghailanders
The European world of Old Shanghai
The European community of Shanghai ruled the city, even though they were completely outnumbered by the Chinese around and among them. Many foreigners were just in Shanghai for a short while, to make a fortune before moving on or to return home. But by the early 20th century, increasing numbers saw Shanghai as their home. They lived a privileged life, full of servants and dancing. Until the Russian and jewish refugees started arriving in the 1920s, Europeans in Shanghai were almost all of solid means -- except for the soldiers and sailors there to protect the interests of their masters.
