The Times of London's comment in 1840 on news that the Zhoushan islands to the south of Shanghai had been occupied by British forces:
"The British flag waves over a portion of the Chinese Empire for the first time! Chusan fell into the hands of the English on Sunday, the 5th of July, and one more settlement in the Far East was added to the British Crown."
