Cartoons Here is a selection of cartoons dating from the Shanghai of the early decades of the 20th century. There were two great cartoonists operating in Shanghai between the 1920s and the end of Old Shanghai in 1949 -- the white Russian Sapajou and the Austrian Schiff. From their platforms -- the local English-language daily newspapers of the day -- they provided a unique and crystal-clear view of the world of the Shanghailanders and the city's extraordinary multi-racial and politically complex situation. There was only one Chinese cartoonist who could compete - Zhang Leping, who created the unforgettable character San Mao (Three Hairs), a homeless waif lost in the hard-hearted world of Shanghai in the late 1940s. Also of note is Herge's creation Tin Tin who, with his trusty companion Snowy visited Shanghai in the early 1930s for the Adventure of the Blue Lotus. Click on the picture icons for more. |
