This book gives a better feel for the lives of foreigners in Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s than any other. It is a diary written from the perspective of a foreign baby, who watches with amusement and semi-understanding the goings-on in his household -- both upstairs and downstairs, masters and servants. It's sympathetic towards the Chinese, vicious towards the Japanese. It was written by Elsie McCormick, who appears to have been American. The copy we have is a third edition, published in 1927 by the Chinese American Publishing Co. |
