TCSE's favorite Sanghai artist Wu Yiming answers questions Life, The Universe and Everything including the power of money
"I may seem to some people to be living on a different artistic level but I still feel I am a normal person. My art is my life, but it is also a hobby for me. I don't think I am an old-fashioned Chinese, but I have decided through my life experience that irresponsible people never do anything well, especially artists. Being a responsible person is therefore the most important thing in my life.
Many people have asked me if I want to go abroad, or so I want to live
overseas, but I feel my art is based on traditional Chinese history and
education. I am not planning to go abroad, but I am very interested in
other countries. I have many friends from different places, they give me
good advise. Right now, I enjoy my work and life here. Painting is my
job, I do it everyday, I have to. I don't wait for inspiration to paint
- I am also inspired when I am painting, I get ideas. I love knowing that someone really enjoys my paintings. If someone will pay for my paintings, I would like to know him.
Once a friend asked me if I would take 100,000 dollars to paint an extra line on one of my paintings. I had to think for a while, then I said. 'I would see if the person really wanted to contribute to my art, or just wanted to show off himself and his money. I can't abide someone who wants to show how much money they have. We have our pride.
Everything is developing. So many great people are working on different
subjects, there is no end to anything. Most of them are trying their
best, and everything keeps getting better and better, of course that's
true for art too. I am satisfied, but I will still work hard. Art has
no limits.
