May-May's Diary
Entry for March 16, 1999
Boys and girls! Virgin Atlantic, the British airline headed by that dreamy Norse-like ballooning boss Richard Branson is planning to fly in to Shanghai from London starting in May. Richard came to Shanghai a couple of months ago, and I met him one evening at Park 97. He later passed through on his latest balloon trip, I understand, but didn't stop....
Bodytech's Will Wang, who runs what is certainly the funkiest gym in town, on Panyu Lu, has expansion plans. Seeing as he's taken his membership from 150 to 600 over the year that he has controlled the gym, that should give other health clubs around town pause for thought....
Michelle's 1221 has changed the recipe for its onion cakes slightly. They're bigger. There's the slightest hint of something carnivorous in there, but I don't care. These are seriously the best onion cakes of their type in Shanghai. I understand TCSE is planning to do a take-out soon on the onion cake situation, which is definitely long overdue.
Coco, Shanghai's most extraordinary singing star, has just turned 22!! Just think about it. It seems like only yesterday that he still had brown eyes. I have been invited to a birthday bash at Park 97 this Saturday at which he will scat with "bongles and pipa". Is that bongos perhaps? He confided to I that the album he recorded in Korea last year has been released, and I'm waiting with bated breath to hear a copy of this CD. Apparently it features Coco singing with just piano accompaniment. The sparser the arrantgement the better to allow his extraordinary soulful individuality to manifest itself. What?
I see the subway has begun using an electronic ticketing system, although the human ticker sellers are still in place if you run into problems, which is very comforting.
People keep finding better and better deals for apartments, which means everyone keeps moving and gossiping about the price of rent. Best deal I have heard of so far is an 80 square meter apartment located behind the Shanghai Centre for 3,500 yuan.
Lava, the new Spanish tapas bar in Park 97 is getting rave reviews both for the food and the Sangria. The fiery feel of the decor is very cool! And the onion tart isw nice -- it's like a Quiche Lorraine without the lorraine!!
Shanghai high school student buying tickets at the new electronic ticket dispenser in the subway stations. If you're agraid ofr the machine, you can still buy tickets from bumans.
Byeeeee!!!
