May-May's Diary
Entry for November 4, 1998

A new nightclub / restaurant is opening soon on Yanan Xi Lu, probably at the end of November and probably to be called Caesar's Palace. The theme will be 5-star western food at reasonable prices and 20 yuan for a beer. They are looking for a great band to get people dancing, something R&B woud be nice, although Adam who is helping on the management side says he would really prefer red Hot Chili Peppers. Shanghai's not really ready for Flea yet, I think ....

Speaking of music, 99 Disco on Anyuan Lu has a live band from the States which is helping to turn things round there. Worth checking out.

The pace of new places opening up continues to be dizzying, and Consular Row, or La Promenade on Hengshan Lu opposite the church has just about filled up. You could spend about a week moving from one venue to another, dining and dining again. Congratulations Tom!

Across the road, if timetables still mean anything in this uncertain world, the long-threatened opening of the G's club, might actually happen soon. More info as it becomes available.

Byeeeee!!!

Entry for November 3, 1998

Traffic around town seems to be getting slower these days, maybe a knock-on effect from the Yanan Lu urban-heart surgery currently under way. Rejoice! Bad traffic presumably means the economy is gurgling along well -- traffic jams are not as big a problem in Bangkok these days as they were, it is said. But also get your laptop and phone ready to do double time along the way.

The search for Shanghai's perfect slice of toast bread is on. Croissant de France on Urumqi Lu was for a long time the front runner, but a new and unexpected contender has snuck up on the inside -- Lawsons convenience stores. The white sliced bread, experts reveal, is superb. Stocks run out later in the day, but you can grab the first fresh loaves as they are delivered at about 3am.

Entry for November 2, 1998

Check this. A bargain for you if you drool over Japanese food and have a vast appetitie: all you can eat sushi, sashimi, tonkatsu, california rolls, saki, and Kirin beer for ONLY RMB150 at Haizhe Xing Restaurant 402 Shan Xi Nan Lu. That's with a reservation. No reservation, it's 180RMB. Everyday 5 - 11pm.

Mandy's has finally opened her restaurant after a short life as a bar-only establishment.

Byeeeee!!!
