The Grand Theatre on People's Square, the most classy opera house in
China, has opened, and the initial reaction from the cultural elite is
very positive. Good facilities, good stage, good acoustics. The opening
night was, of course, sold out. But if you had missed out on a ticket
and were desperate to be there for this historic first performance, the
scalpers were there outside to be of service.

Pudong finally seems to be coming into its own. A whole new batch of
foreign banks are moving over there immediately to take advantage of
their crispy new licences to do renminbi business. What's more, the
Shangri-La Hotel on that side of the river has formally opened its
doors. Anywhere with a dozen top international banks, three five-star
hotels and an Irish pub has got to be considered on the map, surely.

Boys and girls, I understand 99 Disco, allegedly and for now the largest
disco in Asia, is planning a complete make-over, with a re-configured
sound system, and new decoration facelift and new DJ's. Competition in
this area of Shanghai's nightlife seems to be definitely hotting up.
Re-launch of this place, which should rightly be called the Cavern, is
scheduled for late September.
