May-May's Diary
Entry for September 08, 1998

Here's another letter I thought I'd pass on to you, boys and girls, to show how broad and significant my influence is having all around thw eorld. due to my deep, penetrating investigatiopnjs into the nightlife word of our city, combined with the unparalleled power of the Internet to deliver my words to the four corners of the world.

Many of the people who write to me, in fact, are fellow Shanghainese people off in the great wide world who are feeling homesick and yearning for a sense of what it's like back home. It seems that my reports provide a taste and a whiff of the streets of the city, which is very encouraging.

This one is from Yiping:

"Hey, May-May, I think you and the stuff you wrote are great. I'm feeling comfortable already w/out being even in Shanghai. I'm in the states and coming back in a week. Thanks to your nightlife info, I feel I won't be blinded and will definitely have a good time. Keep up the good work!! Salute, Yiping"

Well, Yiping, please remember to give me a report on what you find. The nightlife of Shanghai is getting totally out of control. I can no longer hope to report all the goings-on here all by my little self!!

Boys and girls, I seem to be receiving an ever-bigger flood of emails and messages and postcards from fans all over the world, asking me for information on every little element and mystery of life in "our Shanghai". And I love it!!! I try to answer every one, either in private, or in my report.

Here's a recent one from Sven Serrano, who has a story which I feel I have a responsibility to pass on to you all. I have changed the name of the establishment to protect the guilty (or innocent), but it won't be difficult to figure out if you know the location:

"Dear May May, As a visitor in your famed city this summer I look to you for information about where to go at night. But I know I should beware that it is possible to be led down the primose path to murky underworld from which there is no escape! For example, in a recent column about Ju Lu Road you mentioned the xxxxx bar at the end of the row of establishments there. When I peeped my head into the empty place at around 6 pm on a Tuesday I was physically seized and pulled to a stool by 3 shrieking bar girls. I take the philosophy that 'we are being ripped off everyday of our lives, but some ways are fun' so I succumbed to their charms and whiled away two hours, buying 'lady drinks' and even taking my favorite, 'Wendy' for a fox trot on the dance floor. 250RMB later I exited, older and wiser about the ways of Shanghai. Cheers, Sven"

Well Sven. What should we make of this. You COULD take the view that you were ripped off. Or you could take the view that 250 RMB for two hours entertainment with three girls, including a foxtrot with "Wendy", is an absolute bargain!!

I think I'm tending towards the latter view! Who knows? Wendy might turn out to be the love of your life!!

Byeee!!!!
