May-May's Diary
Entry for August 14, 1998

There seems to be a new trend in the nightlife world of Shanghai, boys and girls - special events. Competition is building up between the venues, and everyone is looking for some special trick or concept which will pull in the customers. This is all good news for us, the carousers of Shanghai!!!

Let me list a few of the events out, and PLEASE don't be angry if I miss out your place - the full details are probably in the Week in a Buzz section. If they're not, just send us a fax and we can get the info into the next issue.

  • Park 97, that perfect place for summer evening events, is now doing weekly dance parties on Friday nights with a DJ named Fat Boss.

  • Zoobaa, that shrine of cool warmness, has Phat Larry as DJ on Fridays (what IS this connection between plumpness and CD-spinning capabilities??!!)

  • Club Absolute on Shaanxi Lu is doing a Full Moon Party every full moon, which provides a good excuse for looking up at the sky a few times a month to figure at the lunar phases. First party, including magicians and acrobats, on August 7.

  • Violet, a new bar on Ruijin Lu, is organising a beer drinking contest on August 8.

I am going to give up sleeping altogether, particularly on the weekends. There's just no other way to handle the pace!!!

I see my friend, cuddly artist Zhou Tiehai, has had a long article written about him in the Asian Wall Street Journal! Xiao Zhou is such a clever person when it comes to manipulating those reporters!! What does it all mean? Does it mean anything? The point, I suspect, is that the articles written about him are in fact Zhou's own works, sort of installation art created at one remove.

I saw Zhou a few nights ago and congratulated him on his new success, and we resumed a conversation we began some time ago about one of his huge murals entitled: Shanghai - city of the future. He once offered to sell it to me for one British pound. At the time, I didn't take him seriously, but this time we reached agreement on the sale and he accepted 20 Hong Kong dollars in return for the painting. Have I become a part of ANOTHER piece of Zhou Tuehai installation art??!!

The search for the most expensive glass of orange juice on Shanghai Ñ first contender; Huating Hotel lobby coffee shop - 45 yuan!!!

I see Adam's Show zone has closed again, and Harry's Apple Bar has been replaced by the new Roger's restaurant. Is there a connection here? If there is, please answer one question for me. HOW does Eddy DO it??!!!

Byeeee!!!
