May-May's Diary
Entry for July 31, 1998

I see cuddly huggable man-mountain Matthew Harding is back from Utah and once again playing at the Cotton Club with Greg at his side. He was away for about a month, and business in this premier Shanghai music bar suffered somewhat while he was away. Never was a venue more dominated by one personality!!! I haven't had a chance to talk to him yet, but I could see in the gloom last night that he had a big smile on his face. I wonder what good news he has for us???!!

Matthew's partner Tony, tells me he has big plans for the second floor of the Oudeng Bowling Center on Hengshan Lu. This three storey bowling mecca has suffered like all other bowling places and the second floor is usually closed and dark. Except Tony's Sunshine Cafe outpost is there!!! What to do? Tony says he's decided to take over the bowling lane space and do a really great disco and a health club!!! Top facilities and reasonable prices. I tell you, Hengshan Lu is becoming THE place!!!

Entry for July 29, 1998

Big developments along Hengshan Lu!! There's talk of a second TGI Friday's being built there even before the first one on Huaihai Lu opens!! But I think they're right. There is definitely a market for a really good hamburger in Shanghai. As a vegetarian, I am not in a position to comment on the current chouces around town. But the one in the Hard Rock Cafe LOOKS pretty good!!

Business in the bowling alleys around town continues to plummet. It's so cheap that people are coming up with new games -- rent two lanes next to each other, and then race against the clock and your friend to see who can finish the frame first. Just watch you don't hit the barrier with your ball!!!

Byeee!!!
