Boys and girls, it has been so hectic over the past couple of weeks, I
have just not had a moment to spare to write my report. First we had the
launch of the new newspaper, the Shanghai Buzz, and then President
Clinton and his entourage!!! I have never been busier in my entire
life!!!
In the end, I didn't chaperone Hilary around town as I had originally
suggsted to the White House. but I did see Chelsea in a couple of
places. She dined at 1221 with Michelle one night, and visited Park 97
and the Cotton Club!! She told me that she was just bowled over by
Shanghai and that she wanted to stay on longer. She told hme that she
asked her parents for permission, but was turned down!!! Really!! I had
promised to arrange some really interesting activities for her.
But she invited me to stay at her place (!!!) next time I visit
Washington, and I have a suspicion we'll be seeing her again in Shanghai
one day. Meanwhile, I'm booking my ticket to the States!!!
What a lot of activity in the nighlife arena! There's talk of a new wine
bar, but I haven't managed to track it down yet. I am getting good
reports about a Spanish restaurant called Madrid which has opened on
Maoming Lu, just north of Fuxing Lu. Meanwhile, Michelle of 1221 and
Village fame told the other night that she's really serious about
opening another place in the Fuxing Park, in the Cashbox Mausoleum
across from ... that other place in the Park. She told me she
wanted to make it a restaurant with the feel of an LA black club.
Funkier, she said, that the Cotton Club!!!
I see Chris and Chris, on the the most exclusive furntirue stores in
town, is on sale! Great !!! That moves prices down from the impossible
towards the inconceivable!!
I have received a lovely note from a Taiwan lady who says she is coming to Shanghai soon with her boyfriend and she's looking
for places to go to me friends with similar interests. Well, Mei-lan, I think the best thing to do is to go to Eddie's Tree Bar on
Yueyang Lu. Happy hunting!! And give Eddie a kiss on the cheek from me!!!!
I hear of yet another group that is planning to set up a Thai restaurant here in Shanghai! That now makes three projects underway or in the
planning stages. All done by serious players in the restaurant business -- Tandoor, 1221 and Judy's Too. It should work out well for the rest of
us. Better Tom Yam Gung soup at a cheaper price. Long live the market economy! I wonder which one will open first???
Byeeeee!!!
