May-May's Diary
Entry for June 26, 1998

Boys and girls!!! I am exhausted!! I have been working so hard, helping the wonderful people at Shanghai-ed to put together a new newspaper to be called the Shanghai Buzz. It will appear for the first time on July 3, which will put me into a whole new world. I offered myself to satellite television, as you may remember, but they declined to cooperate. So I have decided to throw myself into the world of paper first. I will leave television for next year!!!

So, a new newspaper in Shanghai!! It will be weekly with reports every week by yours truly on all the latest gossip and goings-on in this extraordianry city of ours.

Right now, as you may have heard, we have President Bill Clinton coming to town with Hilary. They arrive on Monday night, and I was planning to go to the airport to greet them, but it looks like there will be more than enough people there already. I will aim to catch with them later.

I offered some time ago to take FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) on a tour of some of the nightspots in Shanghai -- all girls together. But I have not received any clear reply from the White House, omnly a couple of indirect indications of interest. Maybe they leave this kind of thing to the last minute. Anyway, just to let you know -- I'm available!!!

Bill and Hilary are staying at the Portman Hotel, which is now becoming more fortress like with every day that passes. Goodness knows what it will be like when the couple and their entourage are actually in place!! How are we ever going to get to the supermarket and Expresso Americana??!!

Speakig of coffee, I have just discovered the best reasonablt priced coffee in town, and it will be interesting to see what impact its existence has on the market. Go to the new Westgate Mall, go downstairs to the foodhall, and walk over to the fruit juice counter in the middle. A cup of coffee costs just four yuan, and its pretty good! Four yuan. Now, how much does a cup of coffee at Expresso Americana cost? The smallest cheapest simplest coffee is 22 yuan. Hmmmm. I can see a lot of people in the Shanghai Center deciding they could use the exercise and walk down to Westgate for their daily caffeine fix!!

Byeeeee!!!
