Week of March 2

May-May's Diary
Entry for March 8, 1998

What a miserable day here in Shanghai!! I do wish spring would hurry up!! But I've been really busy, as you will see.

I went to Casa Romano for the first time since the black band 911 wound up their stay. Business shows no signs of improving, which is such a pity. I do think it is a lovely place. I am very taken with the uniforms all the male attendants wear. They have also added real fish to the aquarium which makes up the bar. The scantily-clad go-go dancers, however, have disappeared.

You remember that yesterday I mentioned a place on Huaihai Lu called Thomasville? Well, I went along and visited, and it turns out not to be a club or a restaurant, but a furniture shop!! The most expensive, luxurious, wonderful furniture I have ever seen. American imports mostly. I saw a dining table selling for 55,000 yuan. Everything is aimed at those special people who don't need to ask the price of anything. Most sales, the charming Ms Zhou there informed me, are to local Shanghai people. Just think of it!!! All that money!!! But I have one teeensy-wheeensy criticism -- the logo for the shop looks like it belongs more on a fast food outlet than a high-class furniture store!!

I have decided there is a good opportunity in Shanghai to open a Thai food restaurant. Why is there not even one in our city? There is nothing I like better than a bowl of spicy tom yam gong soup, probably the best remedy ever devised for a hangover. Maybe I should open one myself! Enough of just being a customer. If any of you people out there in Shanghai willing to spend 55,000 yuan for a dining table would like to contact me about investing in a Thai restaurant, we can get a nice little lucrative JV going in no time!!

Byeeee!!!
