RADIO in Shanghai spurts forth the most extraordinary things sometimes. We have sat in taxis and listened as presenters spend a whole hour presenting and explaining the music of the weirdest western bands and musicians. Toad the Wet Sprocket for one. Gone are the days when all you could find on Shanghai Radio was Chinese opera and political monologues. That's not to say it's just like Los Angeles. It's still radio with Chinese characteristics. But music and chat shows now dominate, just like they do everywhere else.

On the FM frequencies, the key places to stop and listen are 101.7, 103.7 and 105.7. There are number of excellent Chinese disc jockeys now operating, especially in the afternoon and late in the evening.
Brian's operation also produces a weekly show called "Hello From Britain", broadcast on Sunday at 10pm and again on Wednesday at 10pm. Then there's the "Sony Double Countdown" on Sunday at 11am and Wednesday at 7pm. Competing against Brian's shows for advertising and sponsorship dollars in this relatively neglected medium, is Joy-FM, a joint venture run by the Hachette group from France. Joy-FM is a bi-lingual show, broadcast every evening at 10pm on 103.7. The show features famous DJ Rick O'Shay (is that your REAL name, Rick?), once a part of the woodwork in Hong Kong, and now friend to thousands of taxi drivers all over east China. In the future, everyone in Shanghai will speak English just like Rick. Joy is also nationally syndicated. On the new FM radio channel, 105.7, you can hear another bi-lingual show called Easy FM every day starting at 1pm. The programme is made in Australia. Then there's jazz shows presented by James, another Australian show presented by the self-styled tragic Miss Pei Zhi'an. Don't miss Jiang Yi late at night...
So much radio choice! No wonder we don't watch television here at Shanghai-ed!!
