Muslim Restaurants

Most of Shanghai's Muslim restaurants are run by Uighur people from the Xinjiang region. The dishes served are characteristic of central Asia. A tasty alternative to the seafood and sweetness of Shanghainese cuisine, Xinjiang dishes consist of lots of mutton (though chicken and beef dishes are available), shish kebab, peppers, potatoes, spices, and "nan" (flat bread).

Xinjiang Restaurant
81 Zhejiang Zhong Lu, tel: 6350-6649
Located on a bustling strip of Zhejiang Lu across the street from the state-run Islam restaurant in the heart of Shanghai's Muslim community. Small, with a table outside on the sidewalk and three inside, this small restaurant offers authentic Xinjiang fare and atmosphere, though it can often get noisy and crowded. Specialities include noodles, zhua fan, yang rou pao mo, gou rou bao, and yang rou bao.

Ali Restaurant 7 Haikou Lu, tel: 6350-8698
Just around the corner is Ali Restaurant. A little more spacious and well-decorated, Ali offers similar dishes. Just as authentic, Ali is a few paces from the main strip there and may be a quieter, less-crowded option during peak hours.

Silk Road Hotel Islam Feng Wei Restaurant
20th floor, Silk Road Hotel 777 Quyang Lu
Tel: 65549988x2003

Located on the top floor of the Silk Road Hotel in Hongkou district, this elegant restaurant is unique in Shanghai. Decorated with Islamic art, it specializes in typical Islamic cuisine, e.g. roast lamb and braised hump.

Tianshan Hotel Uighur Restaurant
775 Quyang Lu, Tel: 6554-8366x360
Also located in Hongkou, in an alley just south of the Silk Road and Tianshan Hotels. Look up for the blue sign with Uigur script. A small restaurant specializing in Xinjiang-style "La Mian" and "Mian Pian". Other Xinjiang dishes such as roast lamb are also available. Just beside the Xinjiang Regional Representative Office, there is a small Uighur community here and it is a good place to strike up conversations with visiting Uighur businessmen. Seating is available both outdoors and indoors. Service is slow, but friendly, and the food tasty.

Tianshan Hotel Muslim Restaurant
775 Quyang Lu, Shanghai 200437 Tel: 65532387x250
A third Tianshan area restaurant is located downstairs at the Tianshan Hotel in Hongkou District, this restaurant has a diverse menu of Muslim and Chinese dishes. Though lacking in decorations and ambiance, this restaurant is nevertheless large enough to seat larger parties. Service is friendly and the prices inexpensive.

Shanghai New Asia Fast Food Co.
285 Tianmu Xi Lu, Tel: 6353-4518
Among the cluster of fast food restaurants across the square from the train station, New Asia has several Asian style fast food restaurants. One is Muslim. With a cafeteria-like atmosphere, you first buy tickets and then choose from the pre-cooked selections. Not the best choice in town for Muslim cuisine, but for those in a hurry, it's an interesting alternative to the KFC just opposite.
