Shanghai-ed - complete guide to life & business in China's greatest city
Nightlife
Karaoke
Casablanca, in the Rainbow Hotel, 2000 Yanan Xi Lu. 6275-3388.

Cashbox, 457 Urumqi Lu near Shanghai Hotel. Good service, no hassles, reasonable prices, best selection of songs in town. usiness is as good as it gets for karaoke these days, which is not all that great.

D.D.'s Cafe, Huashan Lu. The former Marco Polo Club, now a glitzy karaoke place. The building is magnificent. Live HKG-Taiwan-type pop music. Private rooms available.

Golden Age - 8/f, in the building on the corner of Huaihai Lu and Shaanxi lu which has a McDonalds on the ground floor. THIS is not a karaoke joint. THIS is a nightclub. Did you see the opening of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, where Indie escapes from a Shanghai nightclub by the skin of his whip? This is not it, but it's the closest we know of in the city. It features a 20-piece jazz orchestra, and gaggles of Russian beauties who dance Swan lake one minute and wear costunmes that would make even Madonna gasp the next. The manager carries TWO portable phones at all times. Karaoke rooms available. 260 yuan minimum charge per person. Favoured by Taiwanese businessmen who specialise in making offers to people that they probably can't refuse.

LA Cafe, 188 Huaihai Zhong Lu. 6358-7097. A full entertainment range, including karaoke booths, disco and life music in the restaurant on some nights.

Lan Dai, in the Isetan Department Store building at 527 Huaihai Zhong Lu.

Tongshuai - Shuicheng Nan Lu, in the Gubei area. Forgive us if the word gaudy springs to mind, but this is a castle for the kings of karaoke warblers. Sumptuous decorations, overseen by manager Kevin Kong whose range of jackets is one of the wonders of Shanghai's nightlife. The upstairs rooms are pretty solidly booked, but the bar downstairs is the highlight.

Top Ten, at Portman Shangri-la Hotel.

Venus - Huashan Lu, opposite the Hilton. Features naked statues on the facade. Cut-price and more likely to have rooms available than Cashbox. Good selection of songs.
