Inside a Chinese Household

Household appliances are a particular priority for Chinese consumers as their income increases and they look to improve their standard of living.

Ownership of Consumer Durables
Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou

    Refrigerators 90%
    Washing Machines 88%
    Electric hair Dryers 65%
    VCRs 50%
    Air Conditioners 20%
    Private automobiles 2%
Relative ownership of different types of appliances also gives some clues into the mind-set of Chinese householders and the opportunities for related packaged goods (i.e.: YES there are opportunities for take-home frozen foods!).

Average household budgets across China are somewhat misleading because of the extraordinary regional and rural/urban differences in income however what is notable is the high level of average savings at over 30% of income.

While this level is comparable to other Asian countries it is significant given the comparatively lower standard of living in China.

It also shows a level of purchasing power higher than income figures would suggest.
