There are now several beer houses around town, serving liquid brewed on the premises have opened up around town:

Paulaner Brauhaus - 150 Fenyang Lu, just south of Fuxing Lu. Reservations 6474-5700. The biggest beerhouse in town, in a large but not particularly old building in the heart of the highest-class part of the former French Concession which used to be the rehearsal hall of a music academy. The three-storey open interior is beautifully fitted-out - 'tis said the owner has invested US$6 million in the place, and we hope he can make it back someday. The Filipino band works hard, pounding a Stars on 45 medley of hits from the 70s and 80s. The crowd gives the impression that yoiu don't get into the place unless you have a portable phone. The beer is good and German, brewed on the premises. The menu is just about all sausages.

Babylon Fresh Beer City - 4/f Universal Building, 168-172 Yuyuan lu, just north of Jingan temple, Beer pub, restaurant, disco, shows. The best beer in town, say the experts, brewed at the bar by a German beer master. Russian Cabaret show Thursdays and Saturdays.

Eisenbaum Beer House, corner of Beijing Lu and Changde Lu. One of a number of new German mirco-breweries that have sprung up around town. They serve two kinds of beer - yellow and red.

German Beer House - 11 Hankou Lu. Near the Bund.

Bavaria Bauhaus - Xinhua Lu near Holiday Inn. The aim was to create a beer hall atmosphere, but it feels it a bit too much like a canteen. The beer's good, though
