Bars

Always - A new bar / restaurant at 1528 Nanjing Xi Lu, near the Changde Lu intersection. The owner is named Paul Young, but he swears he's never sung the song "Everytime You Go Away" in his life! Always has live music on Friday and Saturday nights courtesy of the taciturn Wade, who does an extremely good impersonation of Tom Waits with a voice carefully moulded over decades with a steady diet on booze and cigarettes. The red doors, just like those at Judy's Too, theoretically open onto the street, but Paul said they can't open them at present because of the mosquitoes!!). The decor is just like Blues & Jazz Bar, the food is just like Malone's. Is there a pattern here? You bet! The cat on the cover of the Always menu is in fact the "Copy Cat"!!!
Badlands Bar, Julu Lu, near Changshu intersection. Charlie is the host, and his move to this new larger location, out of the Fengshui dead zone of Yanan Lu has done the trick. The best Tex-Mex food in town and cheap beer. What more could you ask for? Tel: 6279-4334
The Base Bar, The old Judy's Place on Fumin Lu under a different name. It's a military theme, and there's pictures of the Village People on the steps going down.
BJ Bar - 18 Chong Qing Nan Road, tel: 6372-3476. Open daily, 7:30pm-3:00am. Bills itself as "a cozy Hong Kong style pub".
Blues & Jazz Bar - 44, Sinan Lu, near Xiangshan Lu. Great hi-fi, best blues CD collection in China. Live music on Saturday nights featuring Graham Earnshaw, who claims to have the hardest working band in Shanghai.
Blues & Jazz Bar - 44, Sinan Lu, near Xiangshan Lu. Great hi-fi, best blues CD collection in China. Live music on Saturday nights featuring Graham Earnshaw, who claims to have the hardest working band in Shanghai.
Cafe Net - Julu Lu close to Badlands. May-May's report: Where do you go if your computer is broken and you want to catch up on the latest May-May report? The Cafe Net is the answer. Lorrence is your host and the coffee is good. But don't drink too much of it after dark or you'll be forced to visit .... the lavatory! Which for this particular establishment involves a trek through dangerous territory. Even worse when it's raining! But don't let me put you off. Lorrence gave me two free cups of coffee and I've decided he's a real darling!
Channel Nine - 200 Tiantung Lu, across Suzhou Creek behind Shanghai Mansion. (Not always open, for various reasons. If closed, walk over Suzhou Creek to the New York New York disco instead). A Disco / bar dedicated to those who don't necessarily agree with the proposition "Vive La Difference". Ably run by manager Stanley and a crew of dedicated DJ's. A good space, good selection of music, the bar to the side is pleasant. Warning: watch the steps!
Charlie's - lobby bar in the Holiday Inn, 6280-8888. A funky 1980s throw-back sort of a place, but a significant cut above the usual hotel bar. The Filipino rock cover band operating under the name SEIZ (don't ask), is great, the best in Shanghai.
Chelsea Bar - English style pub in the Westin Hotel, 6275-8888
Cotton Club - corner of Huaihai Lu & Fuxing Lu. Closed at present for renovations. But owner Tony Huang reportedly has big plans for the place. Watch this space.
Cowboy Bar - 536 Chang Le Lu. A converted air-raid shelter tunnel with rooms off on either side in which you will find little bars, karaoke, pool, deck chairs ...
D.D.s, 298 Xingfu Lu (near Pingwu Lu) an exclusive American-style club/bar/disco in the basement of a back street building. THE place to go for late late LATE drinks, and shaking your boottee, and meeting new friends. 6pm-6am., 6280-8670
Danny's Bar, 141 Maoming Nan Lu. Small-ish comfortable bar. Good choice of drinks and CDs. 11am-3am, 6473-2849
Eddy's Bar - has moved to Yueyang Lu. It's now called the Eddy's Tree Pub, and is a definite cut above the old bar. Eddy still looks like Jackie Cheung in his white T-shirt. And there's still a plethora of people who don't necessarily agree with the statement: "Vive La Difference." May-May's comment: I went to see Eddy at his new bar the other night, and you must go, even if you're female!! It seems much more welcoming of the fairer gender than Eddy's former place on Weihai Lu. There's a smallish dance floor, and lots of tree-y things scattered around. Eddy leant over and murmered to me in his delightfully manly way that he is much happier in his new place, and invited me to visit any time. Free drinks, run of the house, VIP treatment all the way. I thanked him profusely, of course. But as you will be aware darlings, May-May receives similar treatment at every nightspot in town!!!"

Groove Pub - at 308 Hengshen Lu, wins the champ award for coolness amongst the new crop of nightspots. Gloomy blue is the feel. The music is acid jazz. There is a huge lawn out the back which is opened up for revellers on weekends. We know of few things so relaxing in the midst of Shanghai's hurly-burly than to have a swing on the swing in the Groove Pub's garden late at night as the stars twinkle (we believe) somewhere above the muggy smog.

Harry's Bar - 2/f of Huaqiao Blg on Urumqi Lu nr the Equatorial. Curry is the featured itrem on the menu. Chrome-and-glass feel, music some of the time.
Hit House - Siping Lu, near Guoding Lu. A bar / disco near Fudan University with atmosphere and cheap drinks. Monday to Wednesday, the DJ is a 65-year-old Chinese guy who claims to be the oldest dance DJ in the world.
Hyland 505 Bar , Sofitel Hyland Hotel, Live band. 11am-1am, 6351-5888
Internet Caf, 3rd floor, Haodu Plaza, 400 Jinling Dong Lu, entrance on Guangxi Lu. Telephone: 6355-7070 x 306. Click for details.
James' Pub, on Xinzha Lu near Chengde Lu intersection. A nautical motif in this French café-like establishment. Pool table and stacked boxes set the mood.

JJ Beerhouse, on Longhua Xi Dao in the middle of the Gubei ghetto, in the same building as the Gubei Gym. It's a huge multi-media concept, with western food, a special room for Chinese soups like grandma used to make, a disco area, a bar area, and a Chinese restaurant with a catwalk that will feature models to amuse diners.
Joy Pub - On Haifeng Lu near Jiangning Lu intersection. It's location is the only disadvantage, but late at night, traffic is not an issue, and your taxi will be there before you know it. Large, friendly space, pool table, small disco room, food available, good, cheap drinks. Live music on Friday nights, featuring the talented female singer Lian Yi, who is not to be missed. Should be successful.
Judy's Too, 176 Maoming Nan Lu. What would a Caribbean bar from old Shanghai look like? Something like this, perhaps. The trishaw seats are a great touch. Best during the summer with the french doors open. Disco later on Friday and Saturday nights, which is one of the key places to be on those evenings for the in-set. Food available.
Kansas Club, 35 Anxi Lu, basement, live rock music many nights. Basic, funky atmosphere.
L.A. Café - 188 Huaihai Zhong Lu. Restaurant, bar, disco and KTV all in one. 5pm-3am (11am-3am Sunday), 6386-3900.

Long Bar - at the Portman Shangri-la Hotel. Live jazz Tuesday nights and Sunday afternoons. 6279-8888.
Malone's - 255 Tongren Lu, American-style bar/restaurant with hamburgers, pool and sports on TV. 11:30am-1am weekdays, 11:30am-2am weekends., Live music many nights. 6247-2400
Manhatten Bar - Huashan Lu opposite the Hilton, the smallest bar in Shanghai, open very late, also the oldest private bar still open. Barman Tony's skill with dice is a sight to behold.
O'Malley's Irish Pub - Taojiang Lu near U.S. consulate on Huaihai Lu. This is an extraordinary place and a must-visit bar. It is situated in an old house in the diplomatic quarter with a huge beer garden and interior decoration authentic and cosy enough to make homesick Irishmen cry. Guiness on tap, a restricted and expensive menu, but food is not top priority for most patrons. The bar has a hundred nooks and crannies, quiet corers to sit in with your friends, and pool on the second floor. There's a strolling Irish minstrel some nights.
Paulaners German Beerhouse - This is a huge three-storey place on Fenyang Lu, just south of the Fuxing Lu intersection. Very successful so far. German beer brewed on the premises, heavy German food available. The clientele includes many Taiwan and Hong Kong businessmen with their local friends and some Europeans. You don't even get in the door unless you have a portable phone. The Filipino band does medleys of 70s and 80s hits which gets the crowd dancing. May-May's comment: I had a quiet word with Loretta, who I suspect is the real power in that place, and she said about half of the customers are locals, and they're drinking about as much beer as the white guys! Good grief, just think about the consequences of this if we extrapolate a few years! Shanghai awash in beer bellies a la Munich! Ugh!! I like my men trim and slim and stylish -- the Old Shanghai way.
Peace Hotel Bar - On the Bund. Features a live jazz band noted for the high average age of its members. Decor is very 1930s. Cover charge, and if you want to request "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now", you will have to pay 40 yuan for the privilege.
Penthouse Bar - bar on top floor of the Hilton Hotel, live music (except Sundays), from a duo feature a lady who used to sing with Boney-M. 8:30pm-2am., 6248-0000
Rent House - 82 Wuyuan Lu - a bikers' hangout, with hogs and trailbikes lined up outside, lots of leather jackets and beer inside. Not quite Hell's Angels, but hey, give it time!
Shanghai Royal Shooting Club - 189 Julu Lu, Xinxing Blg, 2/f. Click for details.
Shanghai Sally - 4 Xiangshan Lu. Friendly bar with pub meals. 6327-1859. Sally has recently been renovated, and is now under the firm but friendly control of manager Craig. He has moved the pool table upstairs and added live music to the evening's entertainment, with reggae several nights a week.
Step Pub - 471 Panyu Lu opposite the Holiday Inn. Bar manager is Annie, once known for her stern management at the Blues and Jazz Bar. Great murals - more details here.
Stock Bar - Maoming Lu south of Yanan Lu. May-May's comment: "You can't miss the place, it probably has on its facade the brightest concentration of neon in the city. Dark glasses are de rigeur, at least until you get inside the door! Once inside, you will find a bar, tables and (most important) a Qianlong financial service screen on which you can keep an eye on your investments as you sip a beer, or in my case a VSOP brandy laced with cream soda. No!!! Just joking, boys and girls. Anyway, I noticed a dart board on the wall and suggested they replace the board with lots of company names so that patrons can use a more scientific method of choosing stocks than the usual Shanghai approach, which is: FOLLOW THE RUMOURS!
Top Ten, night club, 8th floor of Portman Shangri-La Hotel. 6279-8888
Whisky-a-Go-Go at 933 Yanan Zhong Lu, opposite the Exhibition Centre. Whisky a GoGo has decided to close at the present location due to fengshui problems (as May-May mentioned).
Zhou's Bar - Portman Hotel 6279-8888. In the lobby. Great name. Classical music, both Chinese and western, every day.
