in Shanghai in 1917 and attended St. John's Univ.
graduating in 1937. He was talking about his college days
and said he would give anything for a 1937 St.
Johns Yearbook. I e-mailed him about the old shanghai

- I would like to see some mention of Robert Short, 1904-1932, who lost his life defending Shanghai during the 1932 hostilities connected with the 1/28 incident. Far from the usual "mercenary", Short was deeply moved by the suffering he witnessed and went all out to defend the Chinese. Single-handedly battling a formation of Japanese aircraft that were bombing Suzhou Staion, Short hit one of the aggressors before being shot down in flames in the brief but furious aerial melee. The Chinese Government of the time gave Short a huge public funeral, a month later so that his mother and brother could attend, and a large memorial was erected. Short was born in Aberdeen, Washington State, in 1904, and was trained as an Aviator at March Field, California in 1927. All his life he had been known for his big heartedness and sympathy for the underdog, and his quickness to fight on behalf of others who were being taken advantage of. He was an exemplary young man by all accounts, but his inclination to fight on behalf of others led to his rendezvous with China's fate. He deserves a mention. See his story in Yang Kelin's book on the Sino Japanese Wars. (Birthdate of 1915 is wrong.)
